Genetic Testing & Privacy Concerns

Genetic testing sounds very interesting, many friends of mine have already done it, and now I think I should go for it too. However I am a paranoid Orwellian. I don’t trust these companies and have privacy issues in my mind.

Does anybody know about the privacy policy of companies like 23andMe?

I had the idea of purchasing the whole thing through a prepaid card, use fake information to signup and do it from a VPN. Am I being too paranoid? I simply don’t trust these corporates.

Honestly, I think this is the company’s business model. They’re not charging a whole lot for the testing, which makes me believe that they’re more of a data collection company. This genetic data is worth A LOT to private medical companies doing various kinds of research and development.

Having said that, I don’t really care. They can have my genetic info if they want it. The only risk I can think of is some kind of scenario in which insurance companies gain access to the info and use it to change your rates or deny insurance. I also doubt they would be able to use the info as anything but “anonymized” data.

You might have some trouble ordering with the prepaid credit card and fake address. It seems a tiny bit paranoid to think that you need to use a different computer, though.
